Plus, life after influencing, what to do if a friend ghosts you, books, and more.
Hi friends,
Last weekend, we went to Sacramento, CA to visit friends. It was a lovely trip!
Delights included . . .
Renting a compact car and laughing when we were given a white hybrid mini-van instead, reconnecting & talking with friends, driving our friends around in the van, spending an afternoon wandering through the Crocker Art Museum, admiring beautiful oil paintings that were created in the late 1800s, words & images can’t describe this portrait, seeing a museum patron sketching, eating pistachio pasta and fresh bread at Il Fornaio, watching King’s fans in downtown Sacramento, eating quiche and fancy pastries at Ettore’s Bakery, learning about Ettore’s 24-hour baking schedule, a free cheese danish, drinking all the coffee, listening to and watching drummers at Sacramento State, walking on the American River Parkway, and coming home to Ursula the Cat.
Below is my travelogue in photos.

Here’s what sparked my creativity and curiosity recently:
1.) “Is There Life After Influencing?” by Mattie Kahn is a fascinating article about Lee Tilghman (a former influencer).
2.) Friendship has been on my mind lately, and I found the following articles and podcast affirming and helpful:
— “What to do if a Friend Ghosts You” by Catherine Pearson
— “You'd Be Happier Living Closer to Friends. Why Don't You?” by Anne Helen Petersen
— “The 'Quiet Catastrophe' Brewing in Our Social Lives: Sheila Liming examines the structural underpinnings of America's loneliness crisis—and the art of hanging out.”
3.) “The Trouble with Sugar” is an informative podcast, and it made me laugh! Also, there are lots of good links in the show notes.
4.) Someone Else's Shoes by Jojo Moyes is an engaging novel. I loved it!
5.) TarcherPerigee gifted me a copy of The Good Morning Journal by Marc Chernoff and Angel Chernoff. I read part of the book, and I’m looking forward to finishing it. It’s filled with excellent journaling prompts.
I'm still writing in my commonplace notebook, and I've written down so many amazing quotes. Sharing is caring, so I decided to add a segment to this letter called “Favorite Quotes.” It's not the most original name, but you get the idea. :)
Below is my favorite quote from the week (plus more links):
“ . . . Having good relationships with others has consistently emerged as a whopping predictor of how satisfied we are at work, and a recent study found that this link has only strengthened since the pandemic. In 2022, a study conducted by Gallup found that people who had a best friend at work were approximately twice as likely to recommend their workplace and to be satisfied at their job. One large international study examined 12 domains that predict job satisfaction—such as job security, pay, and independence. The two most important factors were interesting work and good relationships.”

Living the good life in Sacramento! Sounds like an excellent trip.
Also cool to see you share the article about Lee Tilghman. I've been enjoying her newsletter for awhile now and admire her courage for ditching the influencer life and striking out into unknown waters. We need more of that truth-telling in this weird world where kids so so so want to be an influencer, but don't understand the true costs of being one. Hopefully there will be more people braving the flak to share what it's actually like!
As always, your letters are refreshing balm, for my weary soul. I welcome your perspective :)
