Take up space & go for it.
Plus, Bike-Pedia, Mamie Brougitte’s cakes, Kari Gale on noticing, and more.
Hi friends,
Lately, I've been into journaling, reading, and riding my pink bike around town. I've also been busy with a new work project, so I don't have an essay to share with you this week. I do have interesting links and photos to share.
I hope the links below spark your creativity and curiosity:
1.) “My advice to young women is to take up space and go for it.” Excellent advice from Thi Bui. Last week, I saw Bui’s inspiring words pinned on a bulletin board at the MONCA.
We were at MONCA to see—Bike-Pedia and Northern California on Wikipedia. The art is gorgeous! If you live near Chico, California go see the exhibit.
2.) Mamie Brougitte’s cakes are gorgeous! Seeing her photos made me want to become a pastry chef.
3.) Suleika Jaouad's writing is beautiful: “A New Way to See & the artist Kari Gale on noticing.”
4.) I found the following interviews on The Active Voice grounding and helpful:
—“Patti Smith loves being alive: Hamish McKenzie talks to Patti Smith about her life of writing, her long friendships, and cancel culture.”
—“Robert Reich is pressing the reveal key for society: Hamish McKenzie talks to Robert Reich about kids these days, culture wars, and standing up to bullies.”
Smith’s thoughts on gratitude moved me. And, Reich’s thoughts on social media, standing up to bullies, and learning and teaching were moving, too. Reich said:
“The best way to learn is to talk to somebody who disagrees with you. Because if we stop talking to people who have different views, then how are we ever going to know what we believe?”
5.) I can’t get enough of Maintenance Phase! Here’s their latest episode: “The 10,000 Steps Myth.”
6.) I’m reading Hanging Out: The Radical Power of Killing Time by Sheila Liming. It’s an excellent book! I’ll write more about this topic soon.
7.) And, here’s my latest article for Be More with Less: “The Joy of Simple Pleasures: Embracing a Minimalist Lifestyle.”
Favorite Quote
As evident from the quotes above, it was hard for me to choose one quote to share with you this week.
I decided to share some of Holly Whitaker’s words because building community is on my mind:
“ … as a response to an unreliable and disorienting internet, or an attempt to solve the problems of a previous era where we gave so much of our lives over to the internet, more of us might instead of doubling down on our time spent online be incentivized to spend more time in the real world, fostering real connections and actual communities, having real debates, and rediscovering the world that exists outside our phones.
Thank you for reading!
